Why You Should Create A Webinar And How To Do It

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: June 27, 2018

You’ve probably heard about how great videos are for marketing and promoting your business. You’ve also probably created some videos of your own and put the on your website, blog, and YouTube channel.  But have you thought of going a step futher with your video content? By that I mean, have you considered hosting a webinar? True, they maybe a bit more involved than you’re used to with simple videos, and may be a bit more work than you might think. But they are very useful tools for businesses for many various reasons.

Some reasons webinars are great for businesses:

* Webinars offer businesses a tremendous value since, if done correctly, the audience can be engaged for hours on end and can ask questions in real-time. You can also ask the audience questions and tailor your content to the audience in real-time.

* You can soft-sell to your audience with your webinar and not have to “hard close” anyone.

*Webinars allow you to postion yourself as a field expert from the get-go when they register for your webinar, before even having started teaching your lesson.

*Webinars have a dramatic reach, allowing you to talk to hundreds of people around the world at one time

*Webinars are one-time, live, events, so that provides a sense of scarcity. If someone shows up late, they’ll miss part of your talk, and if someone doesn’t show up at all, they’ll miss the whole thing.

*You can use webinars to generate leads, since webinars require the audience to go through some type of registration in order to attend. So you will get contact information for them, and you know they have some level of interest in you and your business.

If you think  you want to host a webinar:

  1. Plan your content. Make sure you limit it to one specific topic/idea that you can go into detail about instead of a broad, general topic. This way you can focus on the topic and have less chance of going off on tangents. If working with a partner, find a topic that fits the expertise all involved in the talk.
  2. When chosing partners/co-hosts for the webinar, make sure they are skilled, knowledgeable experts in their chosen fields. They should be well versed in the topic and also comfortable talking on camera.
  3. Pick the right format. Is it going to a Q&A interview with 2 speakers? Will it be hosted by a single presenter? A panel discussion with multiple speakers and a moderator? The subject of your discussion and availablility of speakers will play a key role in your format choice.
  4. How will you promote your webinar? Will you use social media? Send out email notices to current customers? Co-market it with industry partners? Be sure to make use of SEO too.
  5. Create a slide deck and a great, strong script.
  6. Choose the right webinar platform. Also have a landing page for your webinar where people can sign up for it.
  7. Make sure your campaign tracking parameters are set and working so you can follow generated leads.
  8. Make sure audio quality is good by using a landline phone and cabled headset microphones.
  9. Run a test webinar a few days ahead of time to make sure things look good and the equipment is working well.
  10. Get your studio space set up and cleaned, and make sure to turn off computer notifications, cell phones, and any other extraneous distractions.
  11. Make sure you have a technical assistant in case any techincal problems come up.
  12. Be ready to go at least ten minutes before the webinar is scheduled to start.
  13. Remember, things can, and very well might, go wrong.
