Why The Mind Plays A Huge Role In Success & How To Utilize It

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: September 25, 2017

We all want to succeed in what we try to do. We have dreams we want to meet, goals we want to achieve, and we hate the feeling we get when we fail. There have been so many tips and theories floated about to try to help us succeed, and even memes with motivational pictures and quotes can be found all over the internet. But the one key factor in whether we succeed or not has to be, undoubtedly, our mind. You’re probably familiar with the quote from Back To The Future, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything,” or the quote from Einstein, “Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.” There’s a reason those quotes are so popular and memorable – they hold a lot of truth.

The mind is often referred to as the control centre of the body, but it can control more than just our bodily functions. Your conscious mind is the logic part of your mind, where you do all your thinking and planning. It is like the driver of a vehicle, the man behind the wheel of your subconscious mind; the driver directs but doesn’t do any actual work. When you try to do or change something by willpower alone, you will have a hard time succeeding because willpower comes from the conscious mind. You need to use your conscious mind in conjunction with your subconscious to actually succeed.

Your subconscious controls most things you aren’t aware of, like your bodily functions. It’s like an autopilot program running in the background. You can use this successfully do something because the subconscious will learn to accept and act on repetitive actions. That’s how habits are formed, like preferring Coke over Pepsi.  Train your subconscious that you are not your thoughts, and also change what and how you are thinking. Focus on what you want and need to do, what you need to believe, believe in yourself, and train your subconscious for the new habits you will need to succeed.

The power of the mind and thoughts are great. Use your conscious and subconscious together for great power. The thoughts you most often think do tend to come true (the repetitive aspect of the subconscious, as mentioned). Put all your mental energy into the same thoughts or mental images day after day. They will become stronger as you do, and you will also notice changes in your behaviour, attitude, and expectations.

Some things you can do to help program your mind include:

  1. Decide – the first step is to decide what you want to do or change
  2. Believe – believe you can do it or that positive changes are possible
  3. Start within – the first place to start is within yourself, with your mindset, your emotions and attitude
  4. Feed the mind – give your mind motivational images and thoughts to give you a positive mindset
  5. Positive people – surround yourself with positive people who will support you
  6. Goals – set goals for what you want to achieve and write them down; put them where you can see them every day
  7. Positive daily activities – have some positive daily activities/steps to accomplish each goal

You can help your mind along by doing some things to boost it. Exercise and physical fitness can encourage the brain to operate at its optimum capacity. Your diet can also affect your brain. Eating healthy fats and fresh vegetables while avoiding too much sugar and grain carbohydrates can enhance your memory. Celery, curry, broccoli, walnuts, and cauliflower can help protect the brain and grow new brain cells. Mental exercises can help keep your brain active and increase in functions for storing information and facing challenges. Getting enough rest and sleep can help keep your brain functioning correctly; not enough sleep can hamper its abilities in creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. Meditation and stress management can help boost focus and attention.
