If you’re a business owner who’s just starting out or are one who’s been at it for a while, you’ve probably done a lot of research and read a lot of information about what you need to do in regards to running your business, how to make it a success. You’ve probably read all sorts of tips about what you need to do in terms of marketing and branding and all sorts of things like that. That’s all well and good. You’re learned a lot of useful information that can help you out. But book learning can only take you so far. If you really want to know what you should do in order to grow your business and succeed, you need to have a mentor.
A mentor is someone who you can learn from, who has been where you are and where you’re headed, have seen and done it all, and so can give you truly helpful advice, especially if you hit upon a situation that all your studying hasn’t really prepared you for. They can also offer emotional, spiritual, and emotional support, and will check in on you to see how you are doing. They can give you reassurance that you’ll be successful, and that can boost your self-confidence. These are things that are vitally important to helping you succeed. But there are other reasons, as well, that you need to have a mentor to help you succeed.
Having a mentor can provide you with networking opportunities. A mentor can have virtually unlimited supply of connections to people who could be of benefit to your business career in a multitude of ways, whether it be advice, supplies or equipment, or possible customers.
Business owners who have mentors tend to stay in business longer. According to SBA, 30% of new business owners don’t last more than 2 years and 50% don’t last 5 years; however, 70% of mentored owners have made it longer than 5 years.
When it comes to EQ and emotional intelligence tests, mentored business owners tend to have a higher EQ score. Mentored owners tend to have a greater control over their emotions. Many businesses have failed due to being mixed with emotions or crucial business decisions being made based on decisions. Learning to control you emotions, through a mentor, can help you avoid this.
A mentor can be a good sounding board for you to bounce your ideas off of. Every idea you have won’t be great, and a mentor can listen to your ideas, talk you through it, and help you make it better (or tell you it’s stupid and not to waste your time).
Mentoring isn’t anything new. It’s been around for many, many years, and some of the world’s best leaders have had mentors and advisors. Socrates was mentored by Plato. Alexander the Great had Aristotle as his mentor. Warren Buffet had Benjamin Graham for a mentor. You can examples of mentoring all throughout history, and even in fiction, like King Arthur and Merlin or Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
