Game of Thrones, the hit TV show based on George R. R. Martin’s best-selling novels, may just seem like a popular show that can provide a way for us to escape our humdrum lives for an hour a week, but there’s more to it than that. Martin created well-developed characters, and that’s one reason the show and books are so popular. We can relate to characters, but more than that, we can learn from them. They can teach us a variety of lessons. For example, the character of Daenerys Targaryen, a queen and mother of dragons, can teach us many things, including lessons about making tough decisions.
This is a lesson that can be very useful not only in life situations but also to businesses. What can we learn about this from her?
1. Advisors
For one thing, she is smart and has surrounded herself with loyal people she can trust and who she can go to for advice when she needs to make tough decisions. Her advisors are also people who are strong in areas where she is weak, so they have the knowledge she lacks that she can use. Business leaders would be well advised to follow in her footsteps her and also have trusted people you can go to discuss tough decisions with to get their advice and input before making any decisions. Any tough decisions you have to make will undoubtedly have a wide range of effects, so you want to be well informed before you make a decision.
2. Responsibility
Daenerys is the type of person who is strong enough to make the hard decisions, and take responsibility for it. She knows that at the end of the day, after listening to her advisors, the final decision is hers and hers alone to make, and she owns up to what she decides to do and stands by her decision with unwavering conviction. Business leaders should do the same – make the final decision, and stand by it with full conviction. Don’t back down or have second thoughts. Daenerys would follow what she felt was the right thing to do, and so should we.
3. Learning
Daenerys didn’t come into her role as queen and mother of dragons easily or lightly. Her role as a leader was a learned role, and it wasn’t learned easily, and she is always learning. She learns many leadership lessons, such as listening to advisors, turning adversity into opportunity, and that a leader is only as good as those who are under him/her. We, too, must always be willing to learn, not only from our advisors but from what happens around us. And sometimes the decisions that we make end up being mistakes. That cannot be helped. We are not perfect, after all. But they are mistakes we can learn from, so we don’t make them again.
…and when all else fails
