Podcasts seem to be a fairly popular form of reaching people on the Internet in today’s world. It’s a handy way to share your thoughts and opinions on topics, share news, and interview people. Many people seem to have a podcast, and many of them seem to be having some success with it. The popularity of podcasts and the success some people appear to be having with them may have you thinking of starting a podcast of your own to promote your business. But you just may want to think again.
Why should you not start a podcast?
Many people think starting a podcast will make them popular and famous. Even if they do become somewhat popular, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re getting the results they want. Many podcasters actually don’t see huge results from their podcasts. Then again, it’s fairly normal that many people aren’t able to get the right formula together for success in many business ventures.
Many people enjoy listening to podcasts, but not many of them will take action on CTAs from the podcasts. If you’re wanting to start podcasting in order to sell something, you’re better off not doing it, since many people listen to podcasts in order to learn something, to be entertained and empowered, and not to be bombarded by marketing.
It takes a lot of time and energy to create even one episode of a podcast. To start a podcast you have to do things like find a host, get a URL for the podcast, figure out a show format and how long it should be, how many episodes, purchase equipment, etc. It’s a lot of hassle and work. You can probably write at least a blog or two in the time it takes to figure it all out. Then you have to record it and edit it. And then, once it uploads, you’re waiting to see the results. And the results very well may not be what you were hoping for.
You’re still going to have to come up with great content, just as you would for your blogs. If your podcasts don’t have great, interesting content, your shows will be boring and your podcast won’t be a success. Coming up with content can be difficult and time consuming, just like for your blog.
You’re probably thinking of doing it because it’s popular. But because it’s popular is why you should probably not do it. There are so many podcasts out there, you can get lost in the shuffle. Also, many of the people doing it are only imitating and are podcasting because it’s easy and aren’t really trying, and so they end up with boring shows and few listeners and advertisers. You may be better off standing out from the crowd and doing your own thing.
Podcasts are a great tool for branding and for building relationships, and spreading news. It’s a great way to expand your reach, show you’re an authority, and a different way for your target audience to get your content. But as a means of getting people to take action on something, it may not be so great.
