Step-By-Step Guide To Starting Your Business On Snapchat

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: March 21, 2018

When it comes to social networking apps, one of the first ones that many people with think of, aside from Twitter and Facebook, is Snapchat. Snapchat is a popular app that allows users to send brief videos and images to contacts, and it has many different features, such as filters, that are constantly changing and so it can be hard for many people to keep up with. Because of its popularity, though, many businesses are beginning to use it as a marketing method to keep their customers and potential customers informed of news and promotions. One reason for this is because snaps are time-sensitive, only viewable for a set, short length of time, so recipients are more inclined to view them. If you are thinking of starting your business using Snapchat but aren’t familiar with how to use it, here is a step-by-step guide on how to get started.

  1. Open the app, and you will see your back-facing camera open.
  2. Click on the big circle to take a picture. Hold down the big circle to record a video (max video time of 10 seconds).
  3. Swipe left or right after taking your photo or video to scroll through and add a geofilter.
  4. If you’d rather take a selfie, tap the camera icon at the top to switch to the inner/front-facing camera.
  5. Swipe left or right to scroll through and add geofilters. Up to 3 geofilters can be added (“stacked”). Tap hold the screen with one filter enabled and use your other finger to swipe and add more filters.
  6. Facial “lenses” can only be added in selfie mode. Tap and down on the screen before you take a photo. Lens options will appear in a scrollable panel at the bottom of the screen. There are a lot of lens options, and they are constantly changing.
  7. Swipe left or right to stack geofilters on top of lenses.
  8. The “T” at the top right corner will allow you add captions. A caption bar will automatically pop up, and you can drag it to where you want it. A second tap on the “T” will make the caption text bold. Tapping the caption text will bring up a color bar so you can change the color of the text. To exit out, tap anywhere on the screen except for the text. Tapping “T” will also let you move the caption up or down the screen.
  9. The pencil icon will let you write your caption yourself in your own handwriting. Color is customiseable.
  10. Tapping the emoji icon allows for emojis to be placed.
  11. Before sending your snap, you can set the length of time the snap will be viewable once it’s received. This is done by tapping the clock icon in the bottom left corner.
  12. Tap the down arrow to save it to “memories” so you don’t lose it. A tap on the third button will send it to “Story”, which is like a newsfeed, and the snap can be few multiple times for 24 hours.
  13. Tapping the blue arrow will send your snap to the recipient(s) you choose.
  14. Accessing settings will let you see who views your snaps. “View My Story” will make your snap public.
  15. View your profile to add friends and contacts. You can also use Snapchat’s search to find people to add.
  16. You can respond to anyone who replies to your snap, either by comment, photo, or another snap.

That’s the basics. Businesses will want to make sure they have their customers’ contact information so they can add them in order to send snaps. Not everyone will have Snapchat, so make sure to add those who do. Snapchat is a great way for businesses to engage with customers with images and videos they’ll find entertaining, so have fun with it!
