Starting Your Own Business? Here’s Some Entrepreneur Marketing Advice

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: June 10, 2016

If you’re an entrepreneur and thinking of starting your own business, one of the main things you need to consider is how you will market yourself. Marketing is an essential aspect for any business, as it is how you will be promoting yourself in order to find new customers and generate sales. So here is some marketing advice and tips for those of you who are about to take the plunge and start your own business.

1. Value Proposition

Keep in mind, when you devise your marketing strategy, that when people are deciding what to buy, they generally are more interested in the benefits of the product to them rather than what features the product has. So don’t focus so much on telling what the product has or how it is different; play up how the product can benefit your target audience/customers.

2. Have A Marketing Strategy

This is a must for any business. Before you do any marketing, you need to decide how you will go about marketing your business. Which ways will you try? E-mail marketing? Traditional ads? Social media marketing? Who are you going to market to? Who is your target audience? What is your budget for marketing? Are there any unique ways you can try?

3. Content Marketing

This is a great way to show your customers you’re listening to them. It can be a little tricky to do, but when done right, it’s a great tool. Share content – news, updates, etc. – on your website and blogs. Use photos and videos as well as text content to attract visitors and keep them engaged. Superb content and inbound marketing go hand in hand. Put it to good use.

4. Growth Hacking

This is a great way for small businesses and startups who don’t have much money to market themselves. Growth hacking focuses more on using the internet and social media for marketing rather than more traditional avenues.

5. Social Media

Social media is a great outlet for reaching current and prospective customers. Find where your target audience is on social media and reach out to them there. Share news and product updates (and blog posts) with them on social media. Respond to comments and questions from them as soon as possible. Keep engaged with them. Ask them to share your posts, and share theirs in return. Keep your posts interesting and entertaining enough that your followers will want to share them.

6. Blog

Having a blog is a great way to share news and content with your customers and potential customers. It’s also a great way to network with others in your industry/niche.

7. SEO

Make sure you have your website, blog, etc. optimised for search engines. This is a must for generating traffic from search engines. When people search for you or your product/niche, you want to be able to turn up at the top (or near the top) of search engine results. So make sure you are using effective SEO.

8. Customers

Put your customers to use in your marketing. Word of mouth and customer recommendations are great tools. Give your customers great service and they will continue to come back, and will also tell others about you. Ask them to give reviews or testimonials. Give your customers little treats once in while, too, to boost your reputation in their eyes. Give customers freebies, special discounts, etc. And personalise e-mails and other communications to them to make them feel special.

There you go. A few good tips to get you started on marketing your new startup business.
