How To Generate The Best SEO Keywords For Your Business

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: December 5, 2016

For businesses, having an online presence is practically a must in this day and age where most people use the internet for most things now, from socialising and conducting business to playing games, watching videos, and shopping. Instead of the library or a phone book, they use the internet to search for things they need to know, whether it’s finding a business to fulfill a need or information to answer a question they have. So if a business wants to be found online, they need at the very least a website, and possibly a blog. A social media presence would be useful, too. Whichever online presence a business uses, it must also be optimised for SEO in order for it to have a good chance of being found by others during internet searches. One key element of good SEO is to use good keywords that will help your business’s site come up in searches.  How can you come up with the best SEO keywords?

1. Research

You can do it the hard way, of course, and brainstorm keyword ideas and then research each keyword you come up with to see what words consumers are searching and the demand of each keyword. If the keyword you come up with is relevant to your business, test it out by searching that keyword yourself and seeing what comes up. If your business site comes up, you have a good one. If your site ranks higher for a word, that word is better than others. Seeing what other sites come up gives you some insight into your competition and how hard it will be to rank for that word.  Be sure to give some thought to long tail keywords when you’re brainstorming ideas.

2. Tools

Use keyword research tool and keyword generator tools to help you. That’s what they’re there for, and there are many out there you can use, either for free or for a cost. Here are a few you can try:

* – sign up for an Adwords account (no need to set up any campaigns) and use the tool to find relevant keywords by either inputting the website/page to be optimised, they category of the product/service being offered by the business, or giving the tool a seed list of keywords related to the product/service.

* – use this tool to see what words are already bringing traffic to your site. Then you can see if you can come up with similar or better words and adjust accordingly.

* Rank Checker – this is a Firefox extension that will let you check how a keyword ranks during searches. You can download the extension once you sign up for an SEOBook account.

* Moz Keyword Explorer – this tool can help you discover and prioritise keywords by providing various data and suggesting keywords for research.

* SEO Keyword Suggestion Tool – this tool will provide you with a list of relevant keyword suggestions and synonyms related to your searched keyword or topic.

* Wordstream’s Keyword Tool – this tool can let your target certain niches of related keywords, give further suggestions, and also group keywords by theme.

There are many more tools available. For a list some of the top free ones besides those already mentions, you can check out or this one to get an idea of what else may be available to help you generate good SEO keywords.
