Email Marketing Mistakes To Avoid

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: April 7, 2017

When it comes to the internet and online marketing, there are many different ways to go about it, which is why a good online marketing strategy will incorporate a few different ones, such as social media marketing, content marketing, and email marketing. Yes, as popular as social media is, email still has a very strong ROI. As with anything, though, there is the right way to do something, and the wrong way, and that includes email marketing. If you’re going to use email marketing as part of your online marketing strategy, you would do well to avoid making mistakes such as these:

1. No-Reply

Are you seeing a low open rate for your emails? If you are, you may want to make sure you’re not using as No-reply@ or a Donotreply@ email address. If you got an email from one of those, how likely would you be to open it? Probably not very likely. Always be sure to send emails from an address that your recipients can reply to and that they can identify who the sender is. Also be sure to include in your email your phone number and links to your social media so people can contact you in whichever manner they want. Personalisation and transparency go a long way in earning customer loyalty.

2. Image-Only Based Emails

Only a small portion of people have their email accounts set to turn on images automatically. This means that, if you send image-only based emails, the majority of the email list will only see an empty box. Text-only emails have a higher click through rate than picture emails. If you do need to send images, repeat everything in simple text.

3. Links

Emails in a marketing campaign generally contain a lot of links. The goal of an email is to get people to click through to your website. However, if the link takes them to your homepage, they may not want to scroll through to find the offer. Instead, be sure the link takes them to a dedicated landing page in sync with the email. Also, avoid broken links in your emails. No one likes to click on a link and find it takes them nowhere.

4. Botched Subject Line

How embarrassing is it to send out an email and find that the subject line was messed up? Maybe a draft copy got sent by mistake, or it has a glaring typo in it. Or worse, no thought went into it. To avoid a botched subject line, have more that one person check the email before it’s sent, and put a few good minutes into developing the subject line, maybe making a few different versions and reviewing them with others first. Also, try out Co-Schedule’s Headline Analyzer if you’re torn between different subject lines.

5. No Mobile

Have you tried to open an email on your mobile device only to find that you have trouble reading it because it wasn’t optimised for mobile? This is a mistake that has been made many times. Even though the majority of emails get opened on mobile devices, that fact tends to be forgotten. Make sure your emails are optimised for mobile devices. The text needs to be big enough to read. The buttons, links, and CTAs need to be big enough to click on but far enough away from other links that they don’t get hit by mistake. The layout needs to be either “mobile friendly” or “responsive”.
