Business Lessons We Can Learn From Richard Branson

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: August 23, 2017

If you want to learn useful lessons that can help you to succeed in business, or in life in general, it’s usually best to get advice from someone with experience. Someone who often has been through things and learned things the hard way and has struggled to climb to the top can generally offer the best advice to someone who is in a situation because they’ve been in the same situation. One person who can provide some useful advice and lessons not only on life but also about business is the billionaire founder of the Virgin brand and developer of over 100 other brands, Sir Richard Branson. What lessons can this mega-entrepreneur provide to other entrepreneurs and other business people?

1. Challenge The Status Quo

You won’t get anywhere if you just do what other people are doing. Challenge the status quo and the accepted wisdom about things and take a unique perspective about things instead. Try to view things from the viewpoint of the customer and see what they want and need that you can do that others cannot. Create something that will be different and make you stand out.

2.  Value

Create some value in the world. Provide things that will improve lives. Do things to make customers happy. Also, do what you’re passionate about.

3. Simple Pitches

If you have to deliver a pitch about an idea, keep the pitch simple as well as clear and memorable. The simpler a pitch, the easier it is to remember, both for you and the listener.  Be confident and solid in your statement and belief. Don’t use any wishy-washy language like “With any luck” or “We hope”. Also, give a clear explanation of why your business will be around for a long time.

4. Big Dreams

If you don’t have dreams, you have no goal or purpose. Set yourself big dreams that seem impossible so you will have something to chase after. “If you don’t dream, nothing happens,” he says in his book, .

5. Self-Motivate

Entrepreneurs need to be self-motivators. He says that “It’s important to understand what your main motivation is so that you can focus your efforts on reaching those goals. Then structure your job – perhaps by delegating some work – so that you can spend as much time as possible turning this energy to your company’s advantage.” He also says that ‘money should not be the main motivator’.

6. Success Tips

In a post on , Branson offered these 5 tips for success:

  • Listen more than you talk
  • Keep it simple
  • Take pride in your work
  • Have fun, success will follow
  • Rip it up and start again (don’t let failure be the end all, be all)

With over 40 years of experience, Branson has a wealth of advice to share about both business and life. You can find more here, here, here, here, here and here.
