5 Rules For Graphic Design

By: Kalynn Dresser   Date: December 14, 2016

Having a website is important for businesses in order to market themselves and their products online. But just having a website is not enough. The site must be attractive and pleasing to the visitors. A site that is designed poorly so that it appears dull, has color schemes that are garish, or is overloaded with too many things or is hard to navigate will turn away visitors. So a when building a website, there must be good graphic design employed to make the site appealing to visitors. There are many rules when it comes to graphic design, but these are five you must really keep in mind when working with graphic design.

1. Readability/Legibility

Sure, that color might look really pretty, but will the text you put on it show up well enough to be read easily? Visitors won’t stay long if they have trouble reading the content on your site. Choose colors that contrast well so your text will show up. Keep a good font size that isn’t too small or overpowering; if you want to use a smaller or larger font size, be intentional about it. Keep a high contrast so the text shows up clearly. Use capital letters sparingly and as appropriate. Readers feel they are being yelled at if words are all capitalized. Using all capitals also makes it harder to distinguish letter forms.

2. Grid

Always use a grid. They come in many shapes and forms, so you can be flexible with them. Grids help you keep elements aligned on the page in relation to each other. To have a more uniform design, use a few grids as necessary.

3. Design For Your Audience

You will most likely be inclined to design in a way that appeals to you, but if you really want to attract someone’s attention, use a design that will appeal to them.

4. Logical Color and Font Palettes

Color is a big part of design, so put some thought behind the colors you choose. Maybe study a bit about color theory. Learn which colors work best together. Another thing to consider is that there is some belief that certain colors and hues can have certain effects on people, such as orange can stimulate the appetite. Keep your color palette consistent, as well. Along with creating your color palette, you also need to have a font palette that is consistent. Don’t just a lot of different fonts, it gives a cluttered look. Just use a few, as it will give a cleaner look and be easier to read and understand. Also, as with color, it is thought that some fonts tend have a particular “mood” or “emotion” associated with them.

5. White Space

White space is not necessarily empty space needing to be filled. You may want to think that, but you’d be wrong. It’s a great tool that can have many useful effects on your design. It can put emphasis on a certain aspect of your design. It can help your design “breathe” from everything you have added. It can also add balance. White space can eve add a touch of sophistication and as well as add meaning.

So there you have five big rules of graphic design to keep in mind. There are many more rules, and if you’d like to see them, you can find some of them at this article and at this one.
