5 Characteristics Every Good Leader Needs

By: Kelly Bolton   Date: June 12, 2017

Being a leader is an important job. Among other things, a leader has to be able to take charge and give orders as well as set a good example for the people under him or her. It can be a challenging position, full of responsibility, and it’s not something that just anyone can do. There are people who are cut out for it, and those who aren’t. There are those who willingly step up to the challenge and those who sort of just wind up falling into the position. And of course, there are good leaders and bad leaders. Naturally, everyone wants to have a good leader, as success is sure to follow. No one wants a bad leader who makes bad decisions and treats people poorly. So, if you are going to be a leader, try to be a good one. How do you know what makes a good leader? There are many qualities and characteristics of a good leader. Here are five of the top one you will want to have.

1. Honesty

As the saying goes, “honesty is the best policy”. You may hold yourself to certain ethical standards, but when you are in charge of a group of people, you need to raise the bar. You, as the leader, are the guide, not only in what you say but what you do. Your business and employees are a reflection of you, so when you behave honestly and ethically, the people around will do the same.

2. Empathy

A good leader builds a rapport with those under him. He or she empathises with them. As a good leader, you must understand their needs and concerns and show you care about them. Doing so can prevent personal issues and resentment from disrupting the team and can make them more willing to work with you and share your vision.

3. Communication

A good leader has to be able to adequately communicate what the plan is – what the goal is and what needs to be done to reach it. If you can’t relate what your vision is and clearly express any expectations, issues, and advice, you and your team won’t be able to meet your goals.

4. Delegate

A good leader needs to be able to delegate work and responsibility. Trying to do everything yourself will stretch you thin and lower your quality of work and lower production. Entrusting tasks to appropriate people shows your trust in them to help you reach your goal as well as your wisdom in knowing you can’t do it all yourself.

5. Conviction

A good leader has a strong vision as well as a strong willingness to go after that vision. A leader who believes in that visions and works towards it is an inspiration to his team, even on days when things don’t look so good. Staying calm and confident in the face of adversity will keep morale high and embolden your team to keep going.
